Lightstrive

For the artistic program of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Lightstrive had been developed as participative light installation after sunsets. Passersby could play a virtual light like a ball to let it illuminate a building´s facade from ever-changing directions and make the shadows of ledges and balconies dance. Within the boundaries of a large projection screen stretched across the building on street level the light became visualized by a yellow dot. People within the projection´s light cone could use their own shadows to interact with the light on the screen by throwing, tossing or trapping it. The light would bounce off not only from the player´s shadows but also from ground and walls – with some luck you even could shoot a hoop when the light fell into a balcony´s railing.
Lightstrive was one of the earliest non-commercial projection mappings and might even have been the first interactive of its kind.
